About the department:

The Preventive Dental Department means oral and dental health and contains three main divisions:

Community Dentistry Division: This division focuses on raising awareness of healthy practices to maintain a healthy oral environment

Pediatric Dentistry Division: It includes the definition of the stages of the development of dental teeth, methods of diagnosis and treatment, as well as methods of dealing with children within the dental clinics

Orthodontics Division: It provides the basic principles of orthodontics, treatment of problems of jaw plates, and irregular teeth in the jaw.

Periodontics Division: Encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of
diseases of the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth or their substitutes.

  • Ethics & Professionalism

    Course Name: Introduction to Orthodontics.

    Course Description:

    The course introduces the students to the principles of professionalism including ethical conduct towards patients, their families, colleagues, and society in addition to how to keep oneself, members of the dental team and the environment safe by following procedures for exposure control and proper management of waste. In addition, communication skills, oral health education, and teamwork will be emphasized in this course as part of the professionalism theme.

  • Introduction to Dental Literature

    Course Name: Introduction to Orthodontics.

    Course Description:

    Course focuses on Introduction to Evidence Based Dentistry with emphasis on “Ask and Acquire” and develops students’ skills of searching for evidence and assessing whether it is relevant to answer a PICO question. In addition, students are introduced to scientific writing, supporting claims with references, referencing styles, development of scientific presentations. Detection and avoidance of plagiarism, team skills and time management are important features of the course.

  • Oral epidemiology & Biostatistics

    Course Name: Oral epidemiology & Biostatistics.

    Course Description:

    The course aims mainly at introducing students briefly to the principles of epidemiology in general so they can understand factors affecting oral health of populations and groups using an approach that is distinctly different from that used in the clinic with individual patients. In addition, biostatistics part of the course gives students an introduction to the discipline, an appreciation of a statistical perspective on information arising from the health arena and basic critical appraisal skills to assess the quality of research evidence

  • Evidence Based Dentistry-I

    The course aims at giving the students an introduction to the skills of Evidence-Based Dentistry with focus on appraisal of observational studies and clinical trials.

    Course Description:

    The course is the second in the series of Evidence Based Dentistry courses introducing students to the practice of EBD. This course focuses on the appraisal of diagnostic accuracy studies and systematic reviews.

  • Clinical Periodontics-I

    Course Description:

    The objectives of this course are to understand the basic periodontal tissues, understand clinical phenomena in terms of underlying microscopic tissue changes and to be capable of identifying mild to moderate periodontal diseases. Students will learn the fundamental aspects of periodontology. Also, students should be able to understand the importance of preventive dentistry measures in the practice of general dentistry. They should be able to examine the periodontal tissues without compromising attention to details

    Course Description:

    The course enables the student to acquire recognition skills for the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment planning of periodontal disease as well as performing scaling / root planning for mild-moderate cases formulating the appropriate periodontal maintenance program.

  • Pre-Clinical Orthodontics

    Course Name: Pre-Clinical Orthodontics.

    Course Description:

    The course has been designed to teach the undergraduate students, the basic concepts in diagnosing and treatment planning for malocclusion. The content involves both theoretical lectures and pre-clinical laboratory exercises which helps the student to develop manual dexterity in various orthodontic treatment modalities. In order to assure maximum benefit to the students, the course involves new teaching and assessment strategies in order to withstand the modern demands of clinical dental practice

  • Preclinical Pediatric Dentistry

    Course Description:

    The aim of this course is to introduce and enable students to the basic principles of performing patient examinations, diagnosing pulpal status, formulating a treatment plan, and administering local anesthesia, restorative care, and space maintenance for pediatric patients. In addition, they will learn how to display professional behavior towards patients and all members of the dental team.

  • Clinical Orthodontics

    Course Description:

    This course will make the students familiar with the orthodontic case history along with various diagnostic aids. Model and cephalometric analysis is the part of the curriculum which will be taught during the clinical session. The students will present lectures on various pre-assigned orthodontic topics which is going to be followed by group discussions. The course will ensure to meet the present demands of good dental practice in the Kingdom.

  • Clinical Pediatric Dentistry

    Course Description:

    This course is designed to introduce the student to the basic principles of child examination and treatment planning.   • Comprehensive Dentistry I

    Course Description:

    The fifth year Comprehensive Dentistry courses are introductory didactic and clinical courses introducing the students to comprehensive dental patient care experience in a group practice model. Lectures are designed to cover a wide aspect of advanced dental topics related to comprehensive dental care. The course is focused on treating patients in general practice clinics. Treatment planning skills, ethics and professionalism in addition to progress towards multidisciplinary clinical competence is developed during this full-year course.

    Course Description:

    The primary goal of this course is to guide the students in providing comprehensive dental treatment for children from 6-10 years old. Comprehensive dental treatment emphasizes patient education, management, treatment planning, and prevention of dental disease as well as preventive orthodontic care.

    The students will learn how to successfully manage dental team, patients and colleagues while working in private or public sector. The students will be familiarized with principles of quality assurance, office design and marketing strategies which are important for running a successful dental practice. In addition, the course will cover the topics on financial system, appointment and recall system, inventory system, record management system, and employability skills.
