Architecture Engineering Program

About:

The Architecture Engineering Program is considered one of the newest programs in Buraydah colleges, as it was established in the year 1441 AH. The Architecture Engineering Program in Buraydah Colleges is designed to provide developed and accredited engineering education to satisfy the job market’s needs, that support the National Development Plans through:

Compensate the shortage of Architecture Engineers in KSA.
Reduce the level of dependency on foreign Architecture Engineers.
Support the Kingdom's Development Plans, particularly in the construction and infrastructure sectors.
Graduate qualified engineers for advanced AREN studies.
Provide the necessary services for the community in the Architecture Engineering field.
The program currently includes 10 faculty members, including (2) associated professors, and (8) The department is also equipped with highly efficient laboratories that cover all specialization requirements.

    Course Description The aim of this module is to develop knowledge and understanding of, and practice using, manual methods for producing architectural drawings. It focuses on graphical representation methods and techniques in architectural design: Drawing tools and materials; architectural drafting conventions; orthographic projections and views, their types and use in building presentations. Shades and shadows techniques. However, the main concept of the course is to teach students the different symbols used by architects to recognize, indicate and represent architectural plans, elevations sections, and architectural projects.

    This course starts with the definition of the environment (natural and man-made) and its components. Then, it focuses on the "Room Acoustics". Many related topics will be introduced such as: nature of acoustics, weighted pressure levels, sound analysis, comfort and noise indices, acoustic design and noise control In addition, the course addresses the main mechanical systems that are used in buildings to achieve vertical and horizontal circulation. Also, this course includes the hydraulic services that serve the user needs such as: water supply, sewerage, sewer and rainwater drainage, sanitary installations, firefighting, solid waste disposal.

    The course focuses on building energy consumption and thermal performance. It addresses thermal comfort and how to achieve it using architectural and mechanical manipulations. Many related topics are investigated: Heat transfer, Storage and insulation, Air conditioning and ventilation, heating and cooling loads, Central distribution and package units, Mechanical ventilation, Heating appliances, and systems. In addition, the course also addresses topics of architectural spaces lighting either naturally or artificially. Other related topics are also investigated: Daylight quality, Artificial lighting mechanism, Light sources, and luminance design.

    The aims of this module are to understand the relationship between the building architectural form; appreciate the importance of low energy building design in contributing to a sustainable future; present the environmental issues which should be considered during the design and construction of buildings, and to apply these issues on an architectural design problem; Resolution of structural issues, functional requirements, and form generation in low-rise buildings with more complicated architectural schemes for example (intermediate school, health Centre, technical institute---etc.).

    Working documents for buildings as well as the fundamentals and conventions of drafting will be addressed in this class. Students will learn how to choose building materials, incorporate the Saudi Building Code (SBC) into working drawings and how to relate the architects’ drawings to those produced by other specialists. The preparation of the basic set of working drawings (architectural, sewage and waste disposal systems and sanitary fittings, and electromechanical) for a multi-story building.

Second Part: Introduction to different lighting systems. Concept of light.     Fundamentals and design theories based on ultimate strength design and elastic concept using the ACI code. ACI Code requirements. Load factors. Analysis and design of reinforced concrete members subject to flexure, shear and diagonal tension in accordance with ACI strength method. Development length of reinforcement, deflection and crack controls in reinforced concrete members.

    The aim of this module is to develop architectural design capabilities related to the spatial configuration of several repetitive elements while maintaining functional and structural requirements. To design moderately complicated architectural schemes for example (sport center, a factory with one production line.... etc.) This scheme should cover all design aspects with emphasis on using wide-span roofs.

    In this training, the student will spend 8 weeks in the construction industry to acquire practical experience in the Architectural Engineering under the supervision and guidance of the employer and the academic advisor. During this period the student gains an in-depth exposure and appreciation of the Architectural Engineering profession. The student is required to write a detailed report about his training period under the regulation of the AREN department.

The student has to develop these items into a detailed working drawing where each area will be presented in one or more sheets. The course stresses in-depth details of each selected area with an emphasis on the teaching is by means of lectures, studio works, site visits..

    The graduation project is a semester-long design project, undertaken individually or in a small team, under staff supervision. The project includes an introduction to the life cycle of a project from a technical and management perspective. The project is typically the foundation of the student’s engineering portfolio for application to industry or graduate school. Students will apply the engineering concepts covered in the courses learned so far to architectural engineering problems, including the design of building structures and services systems, with an emphasis on teamwork.     The aim of this course is to present students with the principles and practice of sustainability issues as they relate to the built environment and its many stakeholders: practice of creating building structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle: from siting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and deconstruction. This practice expands and complements the classical building design concerns of economy, utility, durability, and comfort. It addresses the full range of issues associated with sustainable buildings, including energy consumption, use of materials, health, assessment methods, and environmental concerns. It discusses the issues through lectures, tutorials and case study reviews that identify how they are integrated into the design of buildings.

    This course introduces some main issues of buildings performance. It focuses on two main topics. The first one is the smart building information systems: Introduction to modes of thought found within humanities and social sciences. The second topic is about building control and diagnostics: It concentrates on the empirical evaluation of the built environment (building components and systems, interactions between building, occupants and environmental conditions) in view of multiple performance criteria (thermal, visual and acoustic performance).
