The course will also enable the students to differentiate between eruption of deciduous & permanent teeth and the students will also be introduced to the process of shedding of teeth.
Course name: PAIN CONTROL AND LOCAL ANESTHESIA.
Course code: MDS 331.
Level: 5
Credit hours: 2
Course Description:
This course is the first course in the oral and maxillofacial surgery courses. It is designed to introduce students to the principles of local anesthesia and pain control, and to prepare them for the demands of all other disciplines of dentistry. It includes didactic and clinical training in applied anatomy and local anesthesia.
At the end of the course the student should be able to discuss the basic principles of local
anesthesia and pain control based on a sound knowledge of applied head and neck anatomy.
The student should display competency in performing the basic injection techniques of local anesthesia on simulation models, and towards the end of the course on patients
Course name: ORAL DIAGNOSIS.
Code: MDS 312
Credit Hours: 5
Credit Hours: 2 hours.
Course Description:
The main objective of the Oral Diagnosis course is to train the third-year dental students in the scientific principles of Oral Diagnosis and enable them to acquire the clinical skills required for the diagnosis of diseases affecting the Oral and para-oral structures. This includes the ability of students to:
Obtain and evaluate the patient’s dental and medical history
Perform a comprehensive clinical examination of the oral and para-oral tissues
Recognize and thoroughly describe the deviations from normal and to establish a working diagnosis based on a differential diagnosis.
Select and use appropriate investigations and consultations needed to determine the treatment required and to rationalize different treatment considerations
Formulate treatment plan and to modify it according to the patient systemic condition.
In addition, this course is designed to improve the students’ abilities on how to develop critical scientific thinking in order to make a correct diagnosis.
Furthermore, case-based learning is applied in the clinical part of the course where students have a chance to discuss the medical and dental history of a given patient. Emphasis will be on the clinical examination of cases
Course name: ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL RADIOLOGY I
Code: MDS 313
Level: 5.
Credit Hours: 2 hours.
Description:
After completing this course, the students will be able to understand the basic principles of dental radiology which include radiation physics, protection and biological effects as well as the students will be able practice intraoral radiographic techniques and learn the basic concepts of infection control, biology and protection procedures related to radiology. This course will also enable the students to identify the normal anatomical structures, carious, periodontal and periapical lesions along with assessing the radiographic quality and the errors. The aim of this course is to enable the students to practice intraoral radiographic exposure techniques, as well as radiographic interpretation. The course will also teach the students how to interpret normal anatomy, caries, periodontal and periapical diseases, as well as diseases which affect the jaw and skull bones. In addition, this course is designed to introduce the students to formulate a radiographic differential Diagnosis of radiolucent, radiopaque and mixed lesions and evaluate the need for referral to specialist radiological examination and diagnosis.
Course name: ORAL PATHOLOGY.
Code: MDS 314
Level: 5
Credit Hours: 3 hour.
Course Description:
The course is taught concurrently with oral diagnosis and oral radiology courses, which constitutes integrative nature of oral diagnostic sciences. In this course, the student will go across various oral and maxillofacial pathoses, these include: facial and teeth anomalies, infectious diseases, injuries to the head and neck area and odontogenic lesions. By the end of the course the students are expected to detect teeth and orofacial pathoses and abnormalities, give differential diagnosis of leaned oral lesions, recognize and correlate the histopatholocial features of commonly encountered lesions with their clinical data with brief awareness of the recommend management of each. Several benign and malignant soft and hard tissue neoplasms of the orofacial area will be discussed. Salivary glands’ diseases and tumors will be discussed, and students will recognize the importance of saliva to maintain balanced oral hygiene in health and disease. They will be then introduced to salivary glands neoplasia and discussion of selected tumors. Students will also be exposed to immunological and hematological disorders with relevance to dental practice. A third aspect of this course is an introduction of forensic odontology and brief discussion of common techniques employed in human identification.
By the end of the course the student is expected to detect pathoses and abnormalities discussed in course topics, describe and report clinical and microscopic features of those diseases and establish their differential diagnosis
Course name: ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL RADIOLOGY II
Course code: 323MDS.
Level: 6
Credit Hours: 2
Course Description:
The aim of this course is to enable the students to practice intraoral radiographic exposure techniques, as well as radiographic interpretation. The course will also teach the students how to interpret normal anatomy, caries, periodontal and periapical diseases, as well as diseases which affect the jaw and skull bones. In addition, this course is designed to introduce the students to formulate a radiographic differential Diagnosis of radiolucent, radiopaque, and mixed lesions and evaluate the need for referral to specialist radiological examination and diagnosis
Course name: ORAL MEDICINE.
Course code: 321MDS.
Level: 6
Credit hours: 2
Course Description:
The main objective of the Oral Medicine course is to enable the students to acquire the clinical skills required for the examination, diagnosis and management of Oral and para-oral structures lesions and outlining dental considerations and management of selected systemic diseases with dental relevance. This includes the ability of students to:
Classify, identify the etiology, and describe the clinical features of the most common oral lesions.
Develop differential diagnosis of the most common oral lesions, select appropriate diagnostic aids, and interpret their results to reach diagnosis of oral lesions.
Diagnose and manage oral lesions, formulate appropriate prescriptions for oral medicine cases, recognize the role of the general dental practitioner in early diagnosis of oral lesions, and apply referral or consultation for advanced cases and cases that need different treatment considerations.
Differentiate clinically between normal oral variants and pathologic oral lesions, and distinguish suspicious or complex oral lesions to be referred for consultation
Course name: ORAL & MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY.

Level: 7
Credit hours: 3
Course Description:
The main purpose of this course is to enable students to perform patient examination, formulate a treatment plan, and perform local anaesthesia, and simple extraction. The students will be introduced to the principles of managing impacted teeth, Pre-prosthetic surgery and cystic lesions; in addition, they will learn how to display a professional behaviour towards patients and all members of the dental team. The main learning outcomes for students enrolled in the course are:
A. Discuss the principles of exodontia (teeth extraction) and other oral surgical procedures.
B. Perform simple extraction of erupted teeth
C. Evaluate; manage complications, which may arise during and after dento-alveolar surgical procedures.
